بھارتی ریاست کرناٹک کی وائلڈلائف کنزرویشن سوسائٹی نے چند روز پہلے اپنے فیس بک پیج پر منہ سے دھواں اُڑاتے ہوئے ایک ہاتھی کی ویڈیو شیئر کرائی ہے جو بڑی تیزی سے وائرل ہورہی ہے۔

The Smoking Elephant

The Smoking Elephant! This unusual behaviour of an elephant was captured on video from Nagarahole National Park and has us perplexed. Our colleague, Mr Vinay Kumar, was travelling with our field staff in a partially burnt patch of the moist deciduous forests when this elephant appeared in their view. The video he captured has had experts trying to decipher the unique behaviour. The elephant would draw up a trunk full of ash close to her mouth and blow it out in a puff of smoke! Dr Varun Goswami, WCS India scientist and elephant biologist, concludes that likely, the elephant was trying to ingest wood charcoal. She appeared to be picking up something from the burnt forest floor, blowing away the ash that came along with it in her trunk, and consuming the rest. Charcoal has well recognised toxin-binding properties, and although it may not have much nutritional content, wild animals may be attracted to it for this medicinal value. Charcoal can also serve as a laxative, thereby doubling its utility for animals that consume it after forest fires, lightning strikes, or controlled burns of this type. اس مختصر سی ویڈیو میں ہاتھی کو منہ سے دھواں اُڑاتے ہوئے دکھایا گیا ہے البتہ یہ دھواں کسی سگریٹ یا حقے کا نہیں۔ جنگلی حیات کے ماہرین کا کہنا ہے کہ ہاتھی کبھی کبھار جنگل سے کوئی جلی ہوئی چیز اٹھا لیتے ہیں اور اس کے دھوئیں سے بالکل اسی طرح لطف اندوز ہوتے ہیں جس طرح سگریٹ، سگار، پائپ یا حقہ پینے والے انسان کرتے ہیں۔ انسانوں کی نقل کرتے ہوئے وہ منہ سے دھواں بھی نکالتے ہیں۔

اگرچہ پہلے بھی اس طرح کی خبریں آچکی ہیں لیکن کسی کو ہاتھیوں کے دھواں اُڑانے والی بات پر یقین نہیں آیا تھا۔ تاہم اس ویڈیو نے یہ الجھن بھی رفع کردی ہے۔ ہاتھی ایسا کیوں کرتے ہیں؟ اس بارے میں فی الحال کوئی کچھ نہیں جانتا۔ البتہ اتنا ضرور ثابت ہوگیا ہے کہ ہاتھی بھی دھواں اُڑاتے ہیں۔

کرناٹک وائلڈلائف کنزرویشن سوسائٹی کے ایک افسر کا کہنا ہے کہ ویڈیو میں جس ہاتھی کو منہ سے دھواں اُڑاتے ہوئے دکھایا گیا ہے، اس کی عمر اندازاً 30 سے 35 سال کے درمیان ہے۔
